Interesting. I did not watch the series. But Petra is not a Ukrainian name. I have been living in Ukraine my whole life, and I don't know a single woman named Petra. Haven't encountered this name in works of literature either.

And yes, I do have a strong accent. When I first heard myself speaking English on a video, I thought it would be best not to open my mouth again ever :)

Yeah, Petra... Why not to use a real female name that Ukrainians actually use? That's how well they research their ethnic characters at Netflix. But that was always the case with Hollywood, remember all those parody on real people characters of either Russians or Ukrainians that Hollywood movies are full of? That is simply part of that culture. That's also how in Soviet movies they portraid Germans until "The 17 moments of Spring" came out in early 70s.

Did not watch that , or any other Netflix series. But, I can say that Russian women are highly regarded as hard and good working ( in Switzerland, where I had few collegues from Russia), well mannered and well educated. Had no encounters with Ukrainian ladies.

Thanks for sharing this, Mina! I always liked to compare my perceptions as compared to people from different backgrounds. This is one of the best tools to learn about our world.

I live next door, in Canada, to two Ukrainian families—refugees from the conflict. They dress soberly, work hard, and do their best to be good neighbours. The Russian diaspora here is the same.

I'm Canadian too btw, but lived in US for the past decade and a half. Originally from Ukraine, though I have to say that I left the place during the Soviet times and never developed a strong affiliation with emerging independent Ukraine for many reasons. I still don't. But, most of our family lives there, some turned to be refugees in Europe so we had to help them a lot financially especially back in spring and early summer. This war affects us all.
